Valeggio
sul Mincio, as the toponym says, spreads out along
the Mincio river that is the effluent of the lake
of Garda. Going for a walk you could visit Castello
Scaligero, Palazzo Guarienti and St Pietro Church.
Near
Valeggio you arrive at Borghetto, a beautiful village
surrounded by green hills, where you can visit St
Marco Church and the suggestive ruins of the bridge
that is called by the inhabitants Pontelongo.
It is an example of extraordinary military architecture,
wanted by Gian Galeazzo Visconti and built by Domenico
Fiorentino, architect and plumber.
An
other interesting thing to visit in Valeggio, is
Villa Maffei della Quercia, now Sigurtà.
It is a neoclassical palace, built by Vincenzo Pellesina
at the end of 1600. Many artists, poets, scientists,
sovereigns were invited to stay. The park around
the Villa is one of the most beautiful in Europe,
it spreads out a 50 hectare surface and gives you
the possibility to go for walks through woods, soft
lawns, little lakes. You can admire several species
of flowers and trees, trunks that lichens transformed
in emerald columns.
