EIt is a fortified village of roman origin, it lies at the outlet of the green Val d'Alpone, which took its name from the Castle, built before the year 1000.
In 1810 Brognoligo and Costalunga were aggregated to Monteforte.
In the center of the village you find the neoclassic parish St. Major Maria church, built at the beginning of ninenteenth century. Indoors it keeps the precious canva of the "samaritana al pozzo" (Samaritan at the pit), a Girolamo dai Libri's masterpiece.
The characteristic bell tower of the church stands out for its long and thin form and it is called by the people of the village "el campanil imbriago". On the right of the church there is the Episcopal Palace, erected between 1453 and 1471, thanks to a Michele da Caravaggio's idea. Indoors there is an elegant cloister with a double open arcade, which encircles a pit. Another noteworthy building is the Town hall, built during the Napoleonic domination in Italy, thanks to a Bartolomeo Giuliani's project.
Not far away from the center there is a district called "Contrada di Rubian", an antique village characterized by portals, little courtyards and paths dug in the rock.
